Negative Sentences in Past Simple

We use "didn't" before the main verb. The structure of a negative sentence in past simple is similar to an affirmative sentence, first, write the subject or pronoun, then, "didn't" followed by the main verb, it goes in base form, and finally the complement and the time expression. Examples:

Interrogative Sentences in Past Simple

We use the auxiliary "Did". It goes at the beginning of the sentence, it is followed by the subject or pronoun, the main verb goes in base form and finally, write the complement and the time expression. Let's see some examples: 

Did you buy a car last year?
Did they play soccer?
Did he write a letter?

Affirmative Sentences in Past Simple

To form an affirmative sentence in Past Simple, we have to write:

  • First, the subject or pronoun
  • Second, the verb (in Past Simple)
  • Third, the complement
  • And finally, the time expression (it is optional) 

For example: 

I bought a car last year.
They studied English. 
He wrote a letter.
My brothers played soccer.

Regular Verbs

They are verbs which end in -ed. 
For example:                              
work - worked
play - played

We have some rules to form the past tense of a regular verb
verbs ending in - y, drop -y and add -ied. For example:
study - studied
try -tried
cry - cried








Other rule is for verbs ending in -e, we only have to add -d. For example:
dance - danced
love - loved
hate - hated



Verbs ending in a consonant, preceded by a vowel and this vowel is preceded by a consonant, we have to double the last consonant and add -ed. For example:
stop - stopped
drop - dropped
plan - planned
